A man has been arrested after a cyclist was fatally struck on a country road in a suspected hit-and-run crash, police said.
The cyclist, aged in his 50s, died in hospital after being hit on Dicks Lane in Ormskirk at about 18:46 GMT on Thursday, said Lancashire Constabulary.
Police said a 29-year-old man from Burscough had been detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving as well as driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.
Even though an arrest had been made, Sgt Chris Evans said the investigation was still "very much ongoing" and urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Police said the cyclist had been travelling towards Wigan Road when he was struck by a car.
A force spokesperson said detectives were "particularly keen" to hear from anyone who saw a Kia Sportage being driven in the area between 18:30 and 19:00 GMT.
Sgt Evans said: "This collision has resulted in a man losing his life and my thoughts are with his loved ones at this devastating time."
