The number of coastguard incidents is consistent with last year

Coastguard rescues in Guernsey so far this summer are consistent with the same period last year, according to Guernsey Ports.

Between 19 July and 19 August, coastguards attended 34 incidents, the same number as the previous year, it said.

Between 1 January and 31 July, there were 132 incidents while there were 115 incidents during the same period in 2024.

The acting harbour master and registrar of British ships, James Way, said the number of vessels on the water this year and people around the coast had increased the "complexity of coordinating responses".

Mr Way said people enjoying the summer months on the water or around the coast should remember the "3 Ps".

The first one is "prepare" by ensuring your vessel and all its equipment are in a good working order before setting out.

The second is to "provide" by carrying the right safety equipment, including a reliable means of communication.

The last is to "perform" by operating the vessel responsibly and to be aware of surroundings, other vessels, and local hazards.
