A football fan is to be charged with assault after a woman was struck by someone falling on top of her at a match.

During Ipswich Town's FA Cup game against Maidstone United in January a man, in an upper tier where away fans were sitting, fell into home supporters in the lower tier of the Cobbold Stand at Portman Road.

Suffolk Police said a 60-year-old man, from Chatham in Kent, had been summonsed to appear at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on 16 September.

He is due to be charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by beating relating to two people, the force said.

It previously said the incident was not being treated as a police matter.

The non-league side caused an upset with a 2-1 win over Ipswich, who went on to gain promotion to the Premier League later that season.

Over the summer, barriers have been added to the upper tier of the Cobbold Stand as part of improvements to Portman Road.
