Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling has been spotted filming his upcoming film at an English seaside resort.

The Barbie and La La Land actor was seen with a film crew on South Parade Pier in Southsea, Portsmouth.

Gosling is working on the movie Project Hail Mary with 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Photographs from the set show Gosling in a yellow raincoat and spectacles, as main character Ryland Grace.

Gosling was also seen waving to fans as he left the pier after filming on Sunday.

Project Hail Mary is based on the book by Andy Weir, who also wrote The Martian, later adapted into a Ridley Scott film starring Matt Damon.

The film will feature Sandra Hüller, who recently starred in the Oscar-winning films The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall.

Gosling's recent movies include The Fall Guy and Barbie, the latter leading to a memorable performance at the Academy Awards of the song I'm Just Ken.

Project Hail Mary is not the first movie to film at the pier.

In 1974 it was wrecked by fire during the shooting of the Ken Russell musical Tommy and part of the superstructure was rebuilt.

The Grade-II pier, which first opened in 1879, was shut in 2012 when Portsmouth City Council served the previous owners with a dangerous structure order.

South Parade Pier Ltd bought the structure in 2014 for an undisclosed sum, and oversaw its award-winning restoration.
