A 74-year-old man has died in a hit-and-run crash in West Yorkshire.

Police said the man was walking on Barnsdale Road in Castleford, Wakefield, when he was struck by a blue Honda Civic at about 14:50 GMT on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the scene, which was just after the bridge near Allerton Bywater, and the pedestrian received treatment but died a short time later.

A man in his 30s was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit.

West Yorkshire Police said the car had been travelling along Lock Lane, which turns into Barnsdale Road, from Castleford to Allerton Bywater and the driver failed to stop at the scene.

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage is being urged to contact the police.
