Seven people have been awarded British Empire Medals (BEM) by a county's lord lieutenant in recognition of their "exceptional contributions".

In December the awards were announced as part of the King's New Year Honours.

The residents were recognised for their work in communities and for charities and other organisations.

The Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Clare, Countess of Euston, said it was an "honour" to meet the recipients.

"It is so heartwarming to hear their stories and the incredible work and contributions they have all made across our county," she added.

The investiture took place on the Euston Estate, Suffolk, on Friday.

It is tradition for the award to be presented by the King's representative and county's lord lieutenant rather than the King in person.

The following people received the award:

  • Mrs Enid Bacon, found of Beck Row Preschool in Bury St Edmunds, for services to early education

  • Mr William Michael Bulstrode for services to the community in Framlingham

  • Mrs Janet Mary Dicks for services to the community in Hadleigh

  • Mrs June Miller for services to the community in Stanton

  • Mrs Bryony Emily Kate Peall for services to the community in Saxmundham during the Covid pandemic

  • Mr Stephen John Vale for services to the community in West Stow

'Inspiring others'

This year an honorary BEM was awarded to Mr Simone Ramacci who is from Italy for services to the St John Ambulance and the community in Suffolk during the pandemic.

Honorary awards can be given to citizens of other countries in recognition of their work.

"I believe we are lucky to have the honours system, which helps to reward and recognise people for the amazing work they do," the lord lieutenant said.

"I hope others will be inspired to look to their own communities and nominate those within it who deserve recognition and thanks for the exceptional work they do."
