A man is seriously ill in hospital after being hit by a car.

Police said the man, aged in his 40s, was struck by a grey VW Tiguan on Herringthorpe Valley Road, close to the junction with Far Lane, Rotherham, at about 16:30 GMT on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is helping South Yorkshire Police with enquiries, the force said.
