A body found in a remote wooded area of Southampton Common prompting a murder investigation is believed to be an adult man, police have said.

The body was found close to the wildlife reserve in the centre of the common, north of the Ornamental Lake on 8 October where police said there was also evidence of a fire.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was working to identify the man and when he was last seen. The force previously said the victim may have been homeless and living on the common.

The force is asking anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from September 6 of The Avenue, University Road, Burgess Road, Hill Lane, between 01:00 - 03:30 BST on 6 September to get in touch.

Officers would also like to hear from anyone who saw smoke or a fire near the nature reserve in recent months.

Police remain at the scene conducting an extensive search and are speaking to those using the common.

The force said officers would be carrying out further house to house enquiries, and looking to identify anyone in the area of the common who has CCTV which may be able to help identify the man and when they were last seen.

During Saturday's Park Run on the common neighbourhood policing officers spoke to participants and put up posters with QR codes linking to a website, external where people can submit information.
