Drivers revving and performing tricks in cars worth £100,000 on Pall Mall in central London have been caught on camera and issued with penalty notices.

A late-night unregistered car meet was discovered less than a mile from Buckingham Palace when Westminster City Council's acoustic noise cameras were triggered.

Vehicles including a highly-tuned BMW Coupe and a Mercedes C63 AMG were seen on CCTV "performing doughnuts in dangerous proximity to onlooking crowds and other road users".

Others blocked roads and produced noise at the same volume as an operating jack hammer.

'Unwelcome and dangerous'

The special cameras, installed in 2021, are activated when they detect events over 90 decibels.

They differentiate an engine’s sound from a typical car horn by monitoring the sound patterns.

Aicha Less, from Westminster City Council, said the drivers caught were unwelcome and dangerous.

“We have a zero-tolerance for antisocial driving, so I welcome the latest round of fines and hope by working with our partners we can identify others.

"If you are looking to meet up with cars like this, our streets are not the place for it."
