A horse died after colliding with spectators during a race - injuring two who needed hospital treatment.

It happened at Cartmel Racecourse, in Cumbria, during its third Bank Holiday race on Monday.

The racecourse said the animal went into the group of racegoers after it suffered a "sudden heart-related condition".

The horse named Wbee received veterinary attention but did not recover, the racecourse confirmed.

The medical issue happened prior to the second-last hurdle and caused the horse to collapse while it was racing.

The attending senior racecourse vet was in attendance "in a matter of seconds but sadly the horse Wbee passed away as he arrived", the racecourse said.

On-site medical teams also helped the group of racegoers.

Two people were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Clarification 28 August: This article's headline originally said the horse was killed colliding with racegoers and has been amended to remove this description, with the article explaining that the racecourse said the horse died after suffering a "sudden heart-related condition".
