Rewind: Hedging bets with baby names

Official statistics on the most popular names given to babies in England and Wales last year have seen Oliver and Amelia come out on top.

But for one Chesterfield couple, the choice was not so straightforward. As this 1986 BBC News report explains, they had her christened with 140. Even this represented a bit of a climb-down on their behalf as their original list had been 270 names long.

The vicar struggled manfully on through the two minutes required to read out her full name, although the child is now known as simply as "Tracey etc". A salutary lesson for those soon-to-be parents struggling to decide.
