Conservation heartbreak for endangered bird
Two of the world's rarest birds hatched this week at a UK conservation breeding centre.
This was the culmination of a project, led by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, external, that has set out to bring the spoon-billed sandpiper back from the brink of extinction. Only 200 pairs of birds remain in their threatened habitat in the Russian Far East.
But the story of these tiny, celebrated arrivals has turned to heartbreak for the team.
