How often are spiders found in supermarket fruit?

Consi Taylor from London had a shock this week when she peeled open a banana from Sainsbury's - and a number of small lethal spiders climbed out.

Sainsbury's apologised to Mrs Taylor and paid for their cleaning costs, stating that their rigorous controls on imported products mean cases like this are rare. But just how rare is it?

National History Museum spider expert Stuart Hine told BBC Radio 5 live's Phil Williams "Unless you actually see something crawl out of your fruit bowl... chances are it's a common British spider."

However food journalist Alex Renton warned that the problem could get worse: "We now want our fruit now grown without pesticides, but it's the pesticides that keep the spiders down."
