Pagers: 'Basic technology but really important'

Planned changes in the provision of pager services has prompted concern by mountain rescuers who still regularly use the devices.

Mark Jones from Brecon Mountain Rescue Team spoke out after Vodafone announced this week that its pager business was to close.

It comes after the Competition and Markets Authority said a possible merger with the only other provider, Capita, could lead to price rises.

Mr Jones told BBC Wales Today reporter Teleri Jones that rescuers used mobile phones but continued to rely on pagers as they have a good battery life and reliable signal in isolated areas.
