Archive: Marcos forced out in Philippines

The new Philippines president Corazon Aquino has been sworn in, bringing to an end years of dictatorship under Ferdinand Marcos.

In elections held on 7 February, the main opposition party, led by Mrs Aquino, and President Marcos both claimed victory - with the incumbent refusing to leave office.

Almost three weeks of political turmoil followed resulting in divisions within the country's armed forces and a popular uprising.
