Newspaper headlines: 'Snap election next year' and energy crisis latest

The Times, external says the decision by Russia not to reopen the Nord Stream pipeline is likely to "renew the turmoil" in the European gas market.
The Financial Times, external also believes the Nord Stream closure will exacerbate fears about gas supplies. It quotes an expert in energy issues that Europe needs to prepare for a winter with no Russian gas, and its key priority must be "reducing gas and electricity demand".
The Daily Mail, external notes that the sale of oil and gas "adds an estimated £700 million a day to the Kremlin's coffers"- and is being used to "bankroll the bloodshed in Ukraine".

In its leading article, The Financial Times, external says if she wins, Ms Truss' first job will be to cushion the impact of soaring energy costs. It believes "failure to directly support at least the most vulnerable households and enterprises would be catastrophic for the economy, not to mention her 2024 electoral chances".
The Daily Express, external claims that whoever wins the Conservative leadership election is expected to demand the party is put on an election footing - with 5 October 2023 a likely polling day.
The headline in the i newspaper, external states that the "Tories fear the wrath of voters after Liz Truss coronation". It says 80% of people surveyed said the government was failing to tackle the energy crisis, and 53% said they planned to keep the heating turned off even if they were cold.
