What's popular and why

As the EU referendum vote swung decisively to Leave, perhaps nobody's fortunes changed more than UKIP leader Nigel Farage. And the change is clearly visible on his Twitter timeline.

He began the night by predicting that Remain would "edge" it and his first tweet after the polls closed struck a rather conciliatory tone:

Along with early reports and financial markets pointing towards a Remain result, the "Suggest a job for Farage" trended on Twitter, driven mostly by messages mocking the UKIP leader.

But one night is a long time in politics and as Leave took a decisive lead, the mood shifted.

Farage's name became a top trend on Twitter, with more than 50,000 tweets mentioning him in just two hours overnight.

The UKIP's leaders critics, however, haven't let up. Nearly all of the most retweeted messages using his name were critical. Opponents took particular issue with his comment that the UK's eventual separation from the EU had been achieved "without a single bullet being fired". Some accused him of bad taste given the recent killing of MP Jo Cox.

While the debate continues, one thing is clear: it was a remarkable turnaround.
