Super-fast internet planned across UK

Every community across the UK will have access to super-fast broadband by 2015, under new government plans.

The government also claims it will be Europe's best broadband network, with £830m of public money invested to upgrade the broadband infrastructure mainly in rural areas.

The strategy builds on plans initiated by the Labour government which had promised universal access to a lower-speed service by the earlier date of 2012.

The money for the new scheme is coming from the BBC licence fee. The private sector is still expected to deliver broadband to two thirds of the UK.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt explained why fast internet access is vital across the UK.
