Portuguese government under pressure over austerity plans

Portugal's government is under growing pressure to back down on its latest austerity plans, after some of the largest protests ever seen in the country.

With members of the two governing parties publicly opposing the plans, and the coalition seemingly in disarray, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, Portugal's president, has called a meeting of the Council of State for Friday afternoon, and has summoned the finance minister Vítor Gaspar to attend.

Last week, Portugal was given one more year to reduce its deficit.
