Expansion

Whitbread's chief executive Andy Harrison said the figures pointed to a "strong first half performance" in a difficult economic environment. He described the Costa performance as "outstanding".

The company said it had created 1,500 new UK jobs, and was on track to create 10,000 over the next three years as expansion continues.

Whitbread is also looking for further growth in China, where it currently has 200 Costa outlets.
