What does the next century hold for the Panama Canal?

Mired in scandal during its conception, and the engineering miracle of the time, the Panama Canal opened 100 years ago today.

More than a million ships have passed through the 80km (50 mile) canal, which today handles five per cent of the world's maritime trade.

But what does the next century hold for the waterway and the small Central American country that now runs it?
