Fishing vessels around the world

The yellow marks represents a time-lapse of daily fishing activity as calculated by Global Fishing Watch.

The initiative, a partnership between Google and ocean conservation group Oceana, is a free platform that tracks the location of the world's commercial fishing boats.

It does this by using the global automatic identification system, under which commercial ships are supposed to transmit their location, speed and direction of movement.
