Is the academy system working for pupils?

The academy system in England, started under the last government, was designed to guarantee a decent education for all who attend.

But an investigation by Newsnight has revealed evidence that some academies are employing what are being called "the dark arts" to rid themselves of under performing pupils.

Academies already permanently exclude far more pupils than other state schools, but this is an altogether different method of removal.

Newsnight's, external Liz MacKean reports on concerns that the drive to do well in the league tables means that some of the most vulnerable school pupils are being discarded, sometimes unlawfully.
