Election 2015: English local council seats contested
The first Thursday in May is the traditional date for council elections, although the contests for town halls often get sidelined when a general election is held on the same day.
The BBC's Vicki Young looks at why only some councils are holding elections, and which authorities could give the more interesting results.
There are also six mayoral elections being held on Thursday.
