Sofia Coppola comeback movie competing at Venice

US director Sofia Coppola's comeback is among the 22 movies competing for honours at the Venice Film Festival.

The film-maker, who collected a best screenplay Oscar for Lost In Translation in 2003, will vie for the event's top prize with Somewhere.

Other entrants include Julian Schnabel, who scored Academy Awards success with The Diving Bell and The Butterfly.

The 67th annual film gala is due to take place in the Italian city from 1-11 September.

Shakespeare adaptation

Some 79 movies are expected to be shown for the first time.

Film director Quentin Tarantino is heading the jury which will award a number of prizes, including the festival's chief honour, the Golden Lion.

The gala's curtain raiser will be US film Black Swan by director Darren Aronofsky, who won the main prize with The Wrestler in 2008.

It will close 10 days later with an adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, starring Helen Mirren as a female Prospero, alongside Russell Brand.

Films from 11 countries will line up for the main competition at the event, including Germany, Greece, Italy and Russia.

No British directors have made the selection for this year's event.

Coppola's movie - her first since Marie Antoinette four years ago - stars Stephen Dorff and Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro.

Ben and Casey Affleck will both be at the festival, but in support of separate projects.

Ben's second outing as a director will be showing out of competition, while Casey will be showing his documentary about actor Joaquin Phoenix's time away from the big screen to concentrate on music.
