Nicole Kidman and country star husband Keith Urban have become parents to a new baby daughter born with a surrogate mother, they have announced.

Faith Margaret Kidman Urban is the couple's biological daughter and was born on 28 December in Nashville, the couple said in a statement.

They thanked "everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier".

The couple have another daughter, Sunday Rose, who was born in 2008.

"Our family is truly blessed and just so thankful to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret," the statement said.

Kidman also has two adopted children with her ex-husband, Tom Cruise.

The couple broke the news following their attendance at the Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Kidman walked away empty-handed after the best actress in a drama prize went to Natalie Portman for Black Swan.

Kidman had been nominated for her performance in Rabbit Hole.

The film tells the story of a young couple struggling to come to terms with the death of their child.
