Spanish artist Jaume Plensa has opened his first major UK exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, near Wakefield. Barcelona-born Plensa is known for works that explore emotions using human bodies in conjunction with letters, light and sound. Photo: YSP/Lorne Campbell/Guzelian
The exhibition includes giant human heads and other works in the gallery's 500 acres of parkland. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is also home to works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Sir Anthony Caro and Antony Gormley. Photo: YSP/Jonty Wilde
Plensa's outdoor works include the eight-metre tall House of Knowledge, a figure made of steel letters, which visitors can walk into. Photos: YSP/Jonty Wilde
The exhibition also includes a series of indoor works. These include In the Midst of Dreams (pictured), a series of elongated, illuminated heads with closed eyes, and Jerusalem, a circle of 11 gongs visitors are invited to strike. Photo: YSP/Jonty Wilde
The exhibition has been co-funded by the Spanish government and has been in the pipeline since the gallery's founder Peter Murray first met Plensa 17 years ago. Photo: YSP/Jonty Wilde
The indoor section of the exhibition features a 50-metre curtain of letters, forming lines from Plensa's favourite poems. Visitors can touch and strike them together to make them chime.
The Plensa exhibition runs until 25 September. The artist has also created public art in Chicago, St Helens in Merseyside and on top of BBC Broadcasting House in London. He will soon unveil a major work in New York and start a project for Chichester Cathedral. Photo: YSP/Jonty Wilde
