Olivier Award-winner Tracie Bennett is to reprise her role as Judy Garland in Peter Quilter's End of the Rainbow on Broadway.

The play, which follows the Wizard of Oz star's final performances in London and her controversial life off stage, will transfer to the US in January.

The show will begin on Broadway on 19 March at an as-yet-unnamed theatre.

However, it will premiere in the US in January with warm up performances at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis.

Set in London in 1968, the play features some of Garland's most memorable songs including The Man That Got Away, Come Rain or Come Shine and Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

It is due to begin a UK tour from the end of August until the end of November before it heads to the US.

The show, which will continue to be directed by Terry Johnson, will officially open on Broadway on 3 April.

It received rave reviews when it ran at London's Trafalgar Studios and scored four Olivier nominations including best actress for Bennett.

The actress previously won two Oliviers for her performances in Hairspray and She Loves Me.
