Theatre awards honour Sir Peter Hall

Sir Peter founded the Royal Shakespeare Company and was artistic director of the National Theatre

Acclaimed theatre directors Sir Peter Hall and son Edward made the Theatre Awards UK a family affair, each taking home prizes from the London ceremony.

The awards were handed out by the Theatrical Management Association to honour the best regional theatre from around the UK.

Sir Peter, who founded the Royal Shakespeare Company, was given an outstanding contribution accolade.

Edward won best touring production for Richard III and The Comedy of Errors.

Directed by Edward and produced by his theatre company Propeller, the plays toured to cities including Sheffield, Edinburgh and Cheltenham in February and March.

Other winners included Sir Derek Jacobi, who won best best performance in a play for the Donmar Warehouse production of King Lear.

Michael Sheen and Bill Mitchell shared the best director award for their epic 72-hour performance of The Passion in Port Talbot.

The Royal Shakespeare Company's Matilda The Musical won two awards - for best musical production and best performance in a musical for Bertie Carvel.
