Jeanette Winterson: 'My adoptive mother was a monster'

Jeanette Winterson's first novel, Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, a fictional account of her own upbringing and adoption, became a best seller and was adapted into a BAFTA award-winning television drama.

Now Winterson has written a new book, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal, which is a true account of her upbringing in the North of England and recent search for her biological parents.

The author told BBC Breakfast that she found comfort from stories and books during her difficult childhood.
