Dolly Parton earned a Tony Award nomination for the music for the Broadway show

Dolly Parton's stage version of her hit film 9 To 5 is to open in the UK, the singer and actress has confirmed.

The musical, which ran on Broadway in 2009, will open in Manchester in October before a UK tour, Parton said.

Parton starred in the 1980 film comedy alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and has written the music and lyrics for the stage adaptation.

On Broadway, the show earned four Tony Award nominations including best original score.

The story centres around three working women who take revenge on a tyrannical boss.

The Broadway version featured West Wing actress Allison Janney and Parton said she was involved in the auditions for actors for the UK run.

"I'm helping them with the production of that and finding the people for it," the singer said in avideo diary, external.

Tickets go on sale at nine to five (16:51 BST) on Tuesday.

Manchester has been chosen for the premieres of shows including Ghost and Monkee Business as part of a scheme by the Ambassadors Theatre Group to make it a testbed for new musicals.
