Ted has bear hug on UK box office for second week

Seth MacFarlane comedy Ted has clung on at the top of the UK box office for the second week running.

The film, starring Mark Wahlberg opposite a foul-mouthed teddy bear, voiced by Family Guy creator MacFarlane, earned £3.2m, a 66% drop in takings from its opening weekend.

In second place, The Dark Knight Rises took £2.1m; while Step-Up 4: Miami Heat completed the top three with £680,000.

British crime film Offender scraped in at 10 with £74,000 from 68 screens.

Cinema receipts fell sharply during the second week of the Olympics.

Combined takings for the top 15 films fell more than £10m from the previous weekend.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days came in fourth place, with takings of £602,236; while Pixar animation Brave made £574,261 from early preview screenings to come fifth.

The Scottish fairytale, starring Kelly McDonald as the voice of flame-haired heroine Merida, was only showing on 147 screens last weekend and goes on general release this week.

The third highest entry, at number 11, was a documentary about Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei. Never Sorry took just over £30,000 from 17 locations.

Alfred Hitchock's early film The Lodger, which is being shown at the BFI in London, as part of its Hitchcock season of films, was next at number 12, despite just showing in just three screens.

Irish monster movie Grabbers made £25,000, while critically-panned drama 360, starring Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz and Jude Law was a new entry at number 15.

The film, which opened the 2011 London Film Festival, took just £25,000 from 35 screens, an average of £738 per screen.
