Emeli Sande has retained the number one slot in the UK album chart and is closing in on Adele for the biggest album of 2012, according to the Official Charts Company.

Our Version Of Events has sold nearly 647,000 copies since its release in February and is now just over 6,000 copies behind Adele's 21.

The Darkness's return Hot Cakes charted at number four.

In the singles chart, Sam & The Womp landed a debut number one with Bom Bom.

The group, led by frontman Sam Ritchie, managed to rack up opening week sales of over 107,000 copies.

They join DJ Fresh, Rita Ora, Wiley, Florence and Cheryl Cole in the group of artists who have managed to break the 100,000 sales barrier in their first week of release this year.

US country star Taylor Swift was the next highest new entry at number five with We Are Never Getting Back Together.

Other new releases in the top 40 include UK rapper Devlin's collaboration with Brit-winner Ed Sheeran on a cover of Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix's (All Along The) Watchtower.

Back in the album chart, indie rockers Bloc Party are back after a three-year hiatus with Four, the week's highest new entry at number three.

Singer-songwriter Jessie Ware earned a debut top 5 album with Devotion.

The X Factor 2010 finalist Aiden Grimshaw claims his first top 20 with Misty Eye.
