Director Richard Linklater has completed shooting the third film in the cult Before Sunrise trilogy.

The film, After Midnight, sees Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprise their roles as lovers Jesse and Celine.

Co-written by Linklater, Delpy and Hawke, it follows 2004's Before Sunset.

"It's great to be back together again, this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight," a statement said.

Following the success of both films, Hawke hinted that a third film was in the pipeline - although this is the first official confirmation of the latest chapter.

Linklater's 1995 film Before Sunrise - the first in the trilogy - followed a chance meeting between an American tourist and a French student on a train en route to Vienna, and the subsequent day they spend together.

The writing trio received an Oscar nomination for their work on the 2004 sequel, which relocated the action to Paris and brought Jesse, now an author, and Celine, an environmentalist, together nine years after their first meeting.

Director Linklater remains best known for high school comedy Dazed and Confused and box office hit School of Rock, starring Jack Black - though his body of work includes films as diverse as Fast Food Nation and the animation Waking Life.

His most recent film, Bernie, a black comedy starring Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine, was released in the US in May.
