George Martin says Love Me Do was "best of a bad bunch"

Over 50 years ago Sir George Martin gave The Beatles a session at Abbey Road studios - launching the band's career.

The Beatles producer - who is credited for shaping the quartet's sound - told me their first single, Love Me Do, was the "best of a bad bunch" at their initial audition.

He admitted he wasn't particularly impressed by the group's music - but was won over by their "charisma".
