Julian Barnes: Novels tell "the truth about life" in a way that the authorities do not

The Man Booker Prize-winning author Julian Barnes has just published a collection of essays, called Through the Window, about writers and writing.

The BBC's Arts Editor Will Gompertz met him to discuss his literary heroes and the importance of the novel.

"I have always thought, since I was a reader that… this is telling me the truth about life in a way that the authorities… are not telling me," he explained.

This is an extended version of the broadcast interview.
