Stars arriving for the 85th Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, Los Angeles, included actress Jessica Chastain, who a gold Armani Prive gown. It's a very "'Happy birthday, Mr President' dress.'' she joked. Chastain is nominated in the leading actress category for her role as a CIA agent in Zero Dark Thirty.
Amy Adams was nominated in the supporting actress category for her role in The Master. She wore an Oscar De la Renta dress.
Singer Adele performed her Oscar-nominated track Skyfall during the ceremony. The 24-year-old missed the Brit Awards because she was busy rehearsing for her Oscar performance. She said her performance "dress weighs 15 kilos so taking a breath is a bit difficult".
Actress Sally Field assisted co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt with his bow tie before hitting the red carpet. She was nominated in the supporting actress category for her role as Mary Todd, wife of the eponymous US president in Steven Spielberg’s historical epic Lincoln.
Actress Kristen Stewart arrived on the red carpet with a few bruises and was aided by crutches. The 22-year-old actress wore a Reem Acra dress.
British actor Eddie Redmayne was one of the first to arrive on the red carpet at the Academy Awards. The star, who plays student Marius in Les Miserables, said he sang his song 21 times before he was happy with his performance.
Actress Reese Witherspoon arrived on the red carpet wearing a Louis Vuitton dress.
Actor Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna Dewan also attended. Tatum later performed a song and dance number with Charlize Theron during the opening segment.
Actor Justin Theroux turned up with fiancee Jennifer Aniston, who wore Valentino on the red carpet and presented an award. Theroux wore a Salvatore Ferragamo suit.
Charlize Theron won lots of praise on the red carpet for her Christian Dior Haute Couture dress, Roger Vivier shoes, and Harry Winston jewellery. She recently shaved her head for a role in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Quvenzhane Wallis is the youngest-ever Oscar leading actress nominee. The nine-year-old was up for leading actress for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson wore a Roberto Cavalli Couture dress on the red carpet. She performed during the ceremony's music in film tribute section.
Supporting actress nominee Anne Hathaway chose a Prada dress - although she told reporters she did not know what she was wearing until three hours before the ceremony.
