Labrinth to get Silver Clef 'innovation in music' award

Labrinth is the first recepient of the Silver Clef award to be announced

British singer and producer Labrinth is to be recognised for "innovation in music" at this year's Silver Clef award ceremony luncheon.

The artist, real name Timothy McKenzie, said it was "amazing" to win an award his "pal" Emeli Sande won last year.

The annual Silver Clef awards raise funds for the charity Nordoff-Robbins, which provides music therapy for adults and children.

Labrinth will be presented with the award on 28 June at London's Hilton.

"Music is my life, so to see how it can help so many people through music therapy is really cool," he said in a statement.

The 24-year-old collaborated with Brit award-winner Sande on his first number one single Beneath Your Beautiful.

He was signed to Simon Cowell's Syco label in 2010, after he topped the charts with a previous Silver Clef winner, Tinie Tempah.

Labrinth's debut album Electronic Earth, featuring guest appearances from British rappers Wretch 32, Devlin and Tinchy Stryder, was released last year.

"Labrinth's many collaborations mean that he is well-known, successful and well-liked by both fans and the music industry," said the charity's chairman David Munns.

Labrinth is the first of 10 recipients of the annual Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards, which is now in its 38th year.
