The new six part series will be broadcast in 2014

A new sitcom from comedy duo Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer has been commissioned by the BBC, it has been announced.

House of Fools, a new six part series, is set in Mortimer's grubby flat which he unwillingly shares with Reeves.

"We're back where we belong and over the moon about making a series of House Of Fools for the BBC," commented the comedy duo.

The series will be recorded with a studio audience later in the year for broadcast on BBC Two in 2014.

"Just as they bent the rules of the panel show format, House of Fools does the same to the studio sitcom," said the BBC.

"It's half an hour of unadulterated Reeves and Mortimer, uniquely surreal jokes, physical nonsense, daft songs, unimaginable props and impossible situations with a comedy thoroughbred cast."

The sitcom sees the pair receive a steady stream of unwanted visitors to their flat, including lady-obsessed lothario Beef (Matt Berry) and Geordie ex-con Bosh, played by Dan Skinner.

Bob's sulky son Erik, played by comic Daniel Simonsen, hides away upstairs while lurking next door is man-eater Julie (Morgana Robinson).

Shane Allen, controller of BBC comedy commissioning, said: "Vic and Bob are the daddies of daft comedy and it's a total joy to watch two men in their 50s goof about so gloriously.

"I'm extremely proud to bring them back to the BBC in this hilarious reincarnation.

Fans of the comedy pair's surreal TV panel show Shooting Stars reacted with dismay when the BBC axed the show in 2011.

The mock quiz originally ran from 1993 to 1997, returning twice - first in 2002, and again in 2009.

House Of Fools is the working title of the BBC in-house production, made in association with Pett Productions.
