Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas are "taking some time apart" to "work on their marriage", according to a statement released by her publicist. This 2006 picture shows the couple at a fundraising dinner in aid of the NSPCC Cymru/Wales Full Stop Appeal in Cardiff, Wales.

Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, married in Manhattan in November 2000 after meeting in France in 1998. This picture shows the engaged couple posing for photographers outside the Russian Tea Room in New York.

The couple had announced their engagement in January 2000, ending months of speculation. Douglas, who had spent Christmas with the actress in Wales, revealed that he popped the question as the couple celebrated the dawn of the new millennium at his home in the Rockies.

She went on to achieve TV stardom as Mariette in The Darling Buds of May (1991–1993).

In the late 1990s, Zeta Jones made her name in Hollywood movies such as The Mask of Zorro and Entrapment. This 1999 shot, taken in New York, was taken to promote the latter, in which she co-stared with Sean Connery.

The star won an Oscar in 1988 for his portrayal of ruthless corporate raider Gordon Gekko in Wall Street. He reprised the character, famous for the line "greed is good", in a 2010 sequel: Money Never Sleeps.

Zeta Jones won her Oscar, for best supporting actress, in 2003 after playing scheming showgirl Velma Kelly in the musical Chicago. The star, who was heavily pregnant at the awards ceremony, is pictured next to Nicole Kidman, who won best actress for The Hours.
