Daniel Radcliffe's Cripple of Inishmaan set for Broadway

West End hit The Cripple of Inishmaan, starring Daniel Radcliffe, is heading to the New York stage.

The play, directed by Michael Grandage, will open at the Cort Theatre on 20 April for a three-month run.

The Harry Potter star made his Broadway debut in a production of Equus in 2008 and returned to the boards in 2011.

Martin McDonagh's play about a disabled teenager living in 1930s Ireland received a warm reception from London critics last year.

Radcliffe's performance was called "understated" and gave the play "its much-need heart".

It follows Billy's story as he attempts to become a movie star when a Hollywood production is filmed on an island near his remote home.

The production formed part of a season of five plays staged by Grandage at London's Noel Coward Theatre.

The entire cast of the London production will grace Broadway.

The Cripple of Inishmaan will be the first Broadway transfer of a production by Grandage's own company, which was formed in 2011 towards the end of his tenure with the Donmar Warehouse.

He oversaw a number of successful transfers of their plays to New York during his 10 years at the helm of the company.

The director and producer has won a host of theatrical awards during his career, including a best director Tony award in 2010 for the New York production of Red.

Grandage was appointed a CBE for services to drama in the Birthday Honours List of 2011.

A number of other big name productions are due to open on Broadway in Spring, including A Raisin in the Sun starring Denzel Washington, and James Franco in John Steinbeck classic Of Mice and Men.
