Emma Stone to make Broadway debut in Cabaret

Stone was the first pick for the role when the show opened but had to pull out over a scheduling conflict

Hollywood star Emma Stone is to make her Broadway debut in the current revival of Cabaret.

The 25-year-old Amazing Spider-Man actress will play singer Sally Bowles in the musical, the role made famous by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film version.

She will replace Oscar-nominated star Michelle Williams, who has been in the role since the show opened in April.

Stone begins her run in Sam Mendes' production on 11 November until 1 February 2015 at Studio 54.

Scottish actor Alan Cumming will continue to star as Emcee at the Kit Kat Club, extending his role until 29 March.

In June, Cumming celebrated his 500th performance in the role, after first playing it on Broadway in 1998 - a performance which earned him a Tony award.

Set in Berlin in 1931, the musical chronicles the seedy cabaret nightlife of the German capital in the the final years of the Weimar Republic.

The revival on the 1998 production has won rave reviews, with the Hollywood Reporter describing it as a "thrilling production, which is even sharper this time around" although some were not as positive about Williams' performance.

The Brokeback Mountain actress made her Broadway debut in the show, stepping into the role when Stone - who was originally cast - had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.

The part has also previously been played by actresses including Gina Gershon, Natasha Richardson, Jane Leeves and Dame Judi Dench.

Stone is currently on the big screen in the Woody Allen film Magic in the Moonlight and will next be seen in the comedy drama Birdman, opposite Michael Keaton, which is due to open the Venice Film Festival next week.
