Kasabian beat Kate Bush at Q Awards

Kasabian's fifth album 48:13 reached number one in the UK in June

Leicester rock band Kasabian have beaten Kate Bush to the prizes for best live act and best act in the world at the Q Awards in London.

Bush had been tipped to win one or both trophies after the success of her recent comeback concerts.

But the awards went instead to Kasabian following their headline slot on the last night of Glastonbury in June.

The former Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson was named a Q Icon at the music magazine's annual awards ceremony.

Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of 2012 and had radical surgery in April in an attempt to treat it.

Elbow's latest release, The Take Off and Landing of Everything, was named best album ahead of records by Manic Street Preachers, Kasabian, Damon Albarn and The Black Keys.

Paolo Nutini's Iron Sky received the best track award, while 22-year-old soul sensation Sam Smith was named best new act.

Smith is also up for four prizes at this year's Music of Black Origin (Mobo) Awards, which will be presented later at the SSE Arena in Wembley, north London.

Ed Sheeran was crowned best solo artist at the Grosvenor House event, which was hosted by Absolute Radio DJ Christian O'Connell.

The ceremony also saw lifetime achievement awards presented to Simple Minds, Culture Club and XTC's Andy Partridge.

French composer Jean Michel Jarre, Johnny Marr of The Smiths and The Charlatans were among the other recipients of special honours.

Q's senior editor Matt Mason said it was "a real honour to recognise the careers of so many musicians that have really helped define modern music".
