Ninja Turtles climb back to top of UK film chart

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has already spawned several movies and TV series

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is back at the top of the UK and Ireland film chart a week after it was knocked off the top spot by Brad Pitt's Fury.

Despite being branded "total turtle turkey" by The Guardian and "dreadful" by The Telegraph, the reboot continues to be a hit with British audiences.

Starring Megan Fox and Will Arnett, it took £1.43m over the weekend.

Fury, about the life of a tank crew in the final days of World War Two, dropped to number three.

It made £1.24m in its second week of release.

The highest new entry on the chart was low-budget supernatural horror Ouija, which entered the chart at number two, taking £1.37m.

The film is based on the board game used by some to try to contact the dead.

Gone Girl, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, was still strong after five weeks on the chart, taking £1.06m to land fourth spot.

3D animation The Book of Life rounded out the top five.

There were two other new entries in the top 10 - this week's North American joint number one, Nightcrawler, could only manage to enter the UK chart at number six, taking £1.06m.

It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an ambulance-chasing freelance cameraman.

Mike Leigh's latest film, Mr Turner, starring Timothy Spall as the famous artist JMW Turner, came in at number seven, taking £904,947.

Spall was recently nominated in the best actor category for his portrayal of Turner by the British Independent Film Awards (Bifas).

The Bifas, which celebrate British films made for less than £20m, will be handed out at a ceremony in central London on 7 December.
