The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne lived up to bookies' expectations, winning the best actor award for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking

They may not have won, but acting nominees Keira Knightley, Steve Carell and Felicity Jones all added glamour to Sunday's proceedings at London's Royal Opera House.

Tom Cruise presented the best film award to the Boyhood team, including Ellar Coltrane (third from left), Ethan Hawke (second from right) and best supporting actress winner Patricia Arquette (third from right). Director Richard Linklater could not attend.

Sally Hawkins and Imelda Staunton introduced Mike Leigh as he received his Bafta Fellowship. The Mr Turner director thanked the Academy for the honour, which he claimed recognised its respect for "an offbeat, alternative, original, idiosyncratic, personal kind of cinema".

Baftas galore! Best actress winner Julianne Moore (left) joins Mike Leigh, best supporting actress Patricia Arquette and best supporting actor JK Simmons - recognised for his portrayal of a bullying music instructor in Whiplash.

Amy Adams (left) and Rosamund Pike (right) shrugged off the cold British weather and braved the red carpet ahead of Sunday's ceremony. Benedict Cumberbatch was joined by his fiancee Sophie Hunter. All of them went home empty-handed (except Sophie).

Michael Keaton throws some Birdman shapes, Jack O'Connell shows off his Rising Star Bafta - an award he said was somewhat lightweight compared to the regular kind - while Wild star Reese Witherspoon brought some A-list Hollywood glamour.

Julie Walters and best actor nominee Ralph Fiennes presented the Michael Balcon award for outstanding contribution to British film to BBC Films. Its head, Christine Langan (centre), collected the award.
