Oscars 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio, Sam Smith and Sylvester Stallone react

Nominees for the 88th Academy Awards have given their reaction to being in line for an Oscar.

Leonardo DiCaprio

The Revenant actor said the film's success was "incredibly surprising" and it "feels great to have this number of nominations" for a movie to which he and director Alejandro G Inarritu had devoted so much time.

Asked what an Oscar win would mean to him, he said: "Of course, you want to be recognised by your peers. It's a wonderful thing.

"But if I'm being very honest, you don't do it for those reasons. You really do it to make a great piece of art that some day you can look back on."

He added: "It's always this strange experience when people start talking about awards because it's something that's beyond your control. All you have control over is what you do on that day and your devotion and what you give to the movie, and I can for sure say there's nothing I didn't do as far as my commitment to this movie."

Alejandro G Inarritu

Mexican director Inarritu said of The Revenant: "We gave it our all on this film and this appreciation from the Academy means a lot to me and my colleagues who made it possible. Champagne and mezcal will run tonight!"

Nick Hornby

The author, nominated for best adapted screenplay for Colm Toibin's Brooklyn, told BBC Radio 5 live his nomination - alongside Saoirse Ronan's best actress nomination - and being a contender for best picture, made the hard work worthwhile.

He said: "It's an enormous tribute to the film in the end, because it's a very small British independent film that was a terrible struggle to get made, and to survive all the way through this kind of brutal awards season and come out with three nominations is incredible".

Sylvester Stallone

Stallone, nominated for his role as Rocky Balboa in Creed, said: "I am incredibly humbled by this honour.

"I was not expecting it... especially at this time in my life. I am certainly grateful to the artists and collaborators who helped make it possible.''

Brie Larson

Having been nominated for Room - also a best picture nominee - alongside author Emma Donoghue, for its screenplay, and director Lenny Abrahamson, the best actress nominee took to Twitter to say: "Thank you @TheAcademy for recognizing @RoomTheMovie, @EDonoghueWriter, @lennyabrahamson and me! We are overjoyed!"

Brie Larson said she was "overjoyed" to be nominated for Room

George Miller

The Mad Max: Fury Road director said: "The crew is responsible for making this movie, and I'm glad they're being recognised in this way... I would never have thought this would have happened. It's really nice to be invited to the party."

Mark Rylance

Wolf Hall star Rylance has received a nomination for Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, in which he portrays arrested Soviet spy Rudolf Abe.

Rylance told the BBC News Channel: "It's very nice to be celebrated and it's such a classic awards ceremony, the Academy Awards - that makes it very pleasing as well."

Sam Smith

The singer, nominated for Writing's on the Wall from James Bond film Spectre, took to Instagram to say: "Unreal. Freaking out. Thank you Academy - Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!"

Finola Dwyer

The producer of Brooklyn, who was previously nominated for An Education, said: "We're so delighted to be nominated. It's just such a thrill.

"It's been fantastic to watch audiences really personally connecting with the film right across America, across the UK and Ireland."

Jamie Donoghue

The British director of the best short film nominee Shok, based on events that took place during the Kosovo war, said: "Being nominated for an Oscar is an incredible experience.

"It is fantastic for the cast, crew and most importantly the people of Kosovo as this is the first time country has ever been nominated."

Benjamin Cleary

Cleary, from Dublin, who wrote and directed fellow short film nominee Stutterer, said: "We're over the moon with the news. Never in our wildest dreams did we think Stutterer would get anywhere near this far, so it's a lovely feeling and a great honour.

"So many talented people took a risk jumping on board with a first-time director and to every one of them, I say a massive thank you."
