Trolls beats Jack Reacher as Loach breaks record at UK box office

Trolls has gone straight in at the top of the UK box office, beating Tom Cruise's latest Jack Reacher film.

The animated children's comedy, which features Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake among its voice cast, took £5.4m ($6.59m) on its opening weekend.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back took £2.7m ($3.3m) to debut at number two - the same position it took at the US box office.

Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake landed at number nine, taking £445,000 ($543,000).

It is Loach's strongest ever debut. Prior to this weekend, his most successful opening was The Wind That Shakes The Barley, which took £391,000 ($477,000) in 2006, according to Screen Daily, external.

Last week's number one, The Girl On The Train, dropped to number three after taking a further £2m ($2.44m) in its third week.

Inferno, which stars Tom Hanks and is based on the Dan Brown novel, dropped to number four with £1.3m ($1.59m).

Bridget Jones's Baby, the third film in the Renee Zellwegger franchise, took £1.1m ($1.34m) to round off the top five.

Further down the top 10, horror movie Ouija: Origin of Evil debuted at number six with £780,000 ($952,000).

Keeping Up With The Joneses, which stars Jon Hamm and Isla Fisher, took £271,000 ($330,000) on its opening weekend to debut at number 10.
