Emma Stone was one of the big winners, taking home the best actress award for her role in La La Land.

Both Emma Stone and Amy Adams (centre) were nominated for best actress. They were joined on the red carpet by British actress and Star Wars star Felicity Jones.

Also up for best actress was Emily Blunt (left), for her role in The Girl on a Train, and Meryl Streep, nominated in the same category for Florence Foster Jenkins. Completing the trio is Andrew Garfield, who was nominated for best leading actor for his role in Hacksaw Ridge.

Hollywood royalty was joined by British royalty, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge adding to the red carpet glamour.

Naomie Harris was nominated in the best supporting actress category for her role in Moonlight.

Stephen Fry was host of the ceremony - the 70th Bafta film awards.

Damien Chazelle won best director for La La Land.

Stone, who is now presumptive frontrunner for an Oscar, said: "I feel very overwhelmed and the jitters are incredible. It's a crazy shaky feeling."

Ken Loach's hard-edged film about the benefits system in the UK - I, Daniel Blake - was the first winner of the night, for outstanding British film.

British actor Dev Patel scooped the best supporting role honour for Lion

American star Viola Davis won the supporting actress title for her role in Fences

Leading actor went to Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea, which also won original screenplay for its writer and director Kenneth Lonergan.

Filmmaker, actor and comedian Mel Brooks was presented with the prestigious Bafta fellowship by Prince William. Brooks said: "This is a singular and august honour."
