Sometimes you don't need words to add weight to a picture, some images just capture an emotion or moment that is timeless. Photographer Elliott Erwitt's pictures are a perfect example of this, so to mark his 85th birthday on 26 July here's a small selection from the vaults of Magnum Photos.

Erwitt is best known for his street photographs, capturing frames where elements combine to produce a pleasing composition, such as here in Saint-Tropez, 1979 .

His eye for detail is second to none.

By isolating certain elements Erwitt is able to produce a surreal moment during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This is one of his best known pictures and was taken in California in 1955 a couple of years after he joined the agency Magnum Photos, with whom he has remained.

Speaking about his work Erwitt said: "It is silly stuff that I think has some relevance with nothing really important happening, but somehow being able to communicate some kind of fun."

He added: "The real trick to taking pictures is just to be patient and wait for them to happen."

He has also photographed many Hollywood stars, including Marilyn Monroe.
