In pictures: Typhoon Haiyan aid stepped up

Aid has now begun to reach more parts of the Philippines devastated by Typhoon Haiyan.

Residents of the remote village of Aubyog, west of Tacloban, which was one of the hardest-hit cities, wave as an aid aircraft departs.

The typhoon swept through the central Philippines in a day, with an official death toll now standing at more than 3,600.

Some 1,186 were also reported missing as of Saturday.

Another 12,500 have been reported injured. Here, an elderly woman waits for treatment at a hospital in Tanauan town on Leyte.

Tacloban has been a key receiving point for aid for Leyte island.

Some survivors were lucky enough to be taken from Tacloban in a New Zealand C130 cargo plane...

...but many people are still waiting at Tacloban airport.

Drinking water remains scarce following the typhoon, but broken pipes can be used for washing.

There are fears diseases may spread. Here a girl receives a tetanus jab in Tacloban.

But for many, as here in the town of Palo, the task is to bury the dead and maintain their graves.

It is the aerial shots - here of Tacloban - that show the extent of the devastation.
